ASQ Returns to Beijing!

Teaching and performing at the
Great Wall of China International Music Academy

In summer 2007, the ASQ returned to Beijing for their third residency at the Great Wall International Music Academy. The Quartet noted with pleasure the growing awareness of chamber music and the increased familiarity with which audiences (at Beijing University, the Forbidden City, and Grand Epoch City) greet the music. Their students — both Chinese and Western — provided further satisfaction: many were returning for their second or third experience at GWIMA, and their dedication and hard work were vividly displayed. The kind of progress that inspires the teacher is what the ASQ has come to expect there. And yes, there were some more outstanding meals!

The American String Quartet was appointed in 2005 to join a select international faculty of teachers and artists at the first Great Wall of China International Music Academy, which took place in Beijing, China, for four weeks, beginning July 15, 2005. The ASQ was in residence for two weeks.

Involving 80 of the world's most promising young artists on violin, viola, and cello from China and throughout the world, the Academy focuses primarily on developing solo and chamber music skills, with additional opportunities to rehearse and perform concertos with the Great Wall Festival Orchestra, a professional Beijing orchestra with the sole purpose to support the young artists of the Great Wall International Music Academy. Guest artists, faculty, and young artists perform concerts in Badaling and Beijing.
